Daniel Island

A large master-planned community located northeast of downtown Charleston.

Promoted as Charleston’s “island town”, Daniel Island is tucked neatly between Mount Pleasant and the upper portions of the Charleston peninsula. The development of this 4,000-acre master planned community commenced in the 1990s when the entire island was annexed into the City of Charleston. Daniel Island features 23 miles of river and creek shoreline and offers residents a traditional sense of neighborhood. Daniel Island is bisected by Interstate 526. The portion of the island that is on the north side of I-526 is dominated by Daniel Island Park, the island’s most exclusive neighborhood, which includes two golf courses and other amenities associated with The Daniel Island Club. The portion of the island located south of I-526 includes the island’s large commercial business district and a series of interconnected neotraditional neighborhoods -- Smythe Park, Pierce Park, Barfield Park, Center Park, Codner’s Ferry Park, Cochran Park, Etiwan Park and Edgefield Park. Daniel Island residents have access to hundreds of acres of parks and 25 miles of trails. Each year, Daniel Island hosts the Volvo Car Open, the largest women’s-only tennis tournament in North America. Daniel Island is also home to the campuses of several large technology companies, including Blackbaud and Benefitfocus.
