Charleston Peninsula

The historic heart of the Charleston metro area.

The Charleston Peninsula is home to one of the most celebrated historic districts in the United States. Charleston’s urban design continues to be studied by architects and urban planners around the world. Charleston is a true pedestrian city, with restaurants, museums, residences, commercial offices, retailers, churches and art galleries, all located within walking distance of one another. Locals know that downtown Charleston’s residential life is made up of several distinct neighborhoods such as Wagener Terrace, Cannonborough, Elliotborough, Wraggsborough, Ansonborough, the French Quarter, and the East Side. The city’s most prestigious neighborhood, which includes the antebellum mansions that line East Bay Street and South Battery, is known generally as South of Broad. Downtown Charleston is filled with notable landmarks and tourist attractions including the Battery, the City Market, Waterfront Park, Rainbow Row, the Old Slave Mart Museum, the South Carolina Aquarium, and minor league baseball (Charleston Riverdogs) at “The Joe”. Walking tours and horse-drawn carriage rides that showcase Charleston’s church steeples and other architectural and historical markers are also popular. Downtown Charleston is also home to several academic centers, including the College of Charleston, The Citadel, the Medical University of South Carolina, and The Charleston School of Law.
